Music Is Instrumental In Growing Musicians, Mentors and Minds

Music Is Instrumental is a service organization launched in 2015 by Hannah Scanlon with the support of her family to bring the benefits of musical education and performance opportunities to youth in Raleigh, NC.  Research shows that musical education has numerous benefits for students of all ages, including:

  • preparing the brain for greater learning by developing motor skills, working memory and thinking skills,
  • improving verbal retention and recall, advancing math achievement, and increasing SAT scores, and
  • building creativity, self-esteem, attentiveness, and perseverance.

Musical education is also positively correlated with success in college, higher income careers, and a lifetime of volunteerism and political engagement, even for students coming from a lower socio-economic background.

Our vision is to provide music lessons, performance opportunities, and mentorship by accomplished high school musicians to every middle-school student in Raleigh, NC.  We launched in January 2016 with an Honor Band for some of the Triangle’s best young musicians in North Raleigh, and look forward to growing into our vision from there.  Please check back frequently to see our progress!
